Russia’s men’s and women’s national teams will return to the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in 2027 after the FIVB confirmed their inclusion.
To accommodate Russia’s return, the 2027 edition will expand from 18 to 19 teams in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The one-off expansion also secures places for the Slovenia women’s team and the Finland men’s team, both of which had earned qualification through recent results.
The decision leaves the FIVB with the challenge of restructuring the tournament format and match schedule. The governing body is still reviewing how the temporary 19-team competition will operate, with further details expected at a later date.
Russia’s return is also likely to raise logistical and sporting questions, as Ukraine’s men’s and women’s national teams remain in the VNL, while several national federations have previously voiced opposition to Russia’s reinstatement.
The FIVB confirmed that discussions with key stakeholders are continuing as it prepares a clear framework for the return of Russian athletes and officials to international volleyball. As part of the process, and in line with IOC recommendations, every participating Russian team will be placed under a dedicated anti-doping testing programme.
Separately, the Russian Volleyball Federation has informed the FIVB that they voluntarily withdrawn from the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Cup. Meanwhile, discussions continue over the possible participation of Russia’s women’s team in the 2027 Women’s World Cup, with the FIVB consulting organizers and national federations before making a final decision.
