RUS M: Kuzbass astound Belogorie at playoffs opening, sparkling León leads Zenit Kazan to win vs. Nova

Kuzbass Kemerovo and Zenit Sankt-Peterburg pulled off a stunner each at the 2017/18 Russian men’s volleyball championship Superliga playoffs outset.

No.7 Kuzbass Kemerovo stunned the second-seed Belogorie Belgorod on the road in Game 1 of the best-of-three Superliga playoff quarterfinals, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 27-25). Viktor Poletaev showed his attacking splendor by tallying 21 points for Kuzbass. Sergey Tetyukhin and Ukrainian Yan Ereshchenko scored 10 points each for Belogorie. The German Georg Grozer did not play much today, starting the match but acted as a substitute in the second and the third set.

No.4 Zenit Sankt-Peterburg swept No.5 Fakel Novy Urengoy by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) with 15 points from Serbian opposite Dražen Luburić and 4 aces from Pavel Pankov. Egor Kliuka scored 12 points and made 3 kill blocks for Fakel.

The top-seed Zenit Kazan, for which Cuban Wilfredo León delivered 26 points (4 aces), and No.3 Dinamo Moscow embarked on the playoffs with a 3-1 win apiece against No.8 Nova Novokuybyishevsk and No.6 Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, respectively.
