The countdown to the first home match of Olympiacos PIRAEUS has started in Greece where the home heroes will play on Wednesday Russia’s standout Belogorie BELGOROD at the “Melina Merkouri” sports hall.

Olympiacos and Belogorie caught a good start of their European campaign as last week they claimed their respective matches, with PIRAEUS edging VK OSTRAVA 3:1 in the Czech Republic while BELGOROD downed Noliko MAASEIK in straight sets. This means that the leadership in Pool B will be at stake on Wednesday night.
The head coach of Olympiacos Dimitrios Kazazis can barely wait for the match as he still has fond memories of those days where he competed in the CEV Volleyball Champions League as a player. “Every time we speak about this match I get goose bumps and start thinking about the Finals of the then Champions Cup we hosted here in 1992” – he said. “Even though we lost to Italy’s Messaggero RAVENNA I still can remember our great fans and what they did for us. They just filled up the stadium to full capacity and the stands were almost shaking, something that left the Italian players simply speechless! So we hope that once more our fans will join us and support us for this game with Belogorie as they already did many times also in the past” he continued. “We are in a good mood and the victory we claimed last week in the Czech Republic was a good booster but we also know that the match with Belogorie will be very difficult. They are among the favourites to win the trophy and they have a star-studded roster. We nevertheless hope for a good result”.

Setter Vasilis Kournetas is the only player who represented Olympiacos in their last Final Four appearance in 2002. “The CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League is the top competition in the world and we are honoured to be part of it. Personally I feel very lucky to have shared such incredible moments in the history of our club and I am also happy to be with the team as we return to play in this league. We caught a good start last week in Ostrava and we simply want to enjoy the match with Belogorie. I believe and hope many fans will come and support us knowing the importance of this game” added Kournetas, who played in Russia for the likes of Belogorie during the 2009/2010 season.
