In front of a great crowd in Atlas Arena, host team Poland suffered their first loss of the competition, against a consistent USA team which celebrated in an extremely close 3-1 (29-27, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23).

David Lee – USA captain: “This match was a do or die situation for us. Poland is one of the strongest teams in the group so come up with three points is a big result for us. After the last point we knew that there is not much time to celebrate this win, we have to move on and focus on Serbia. If we keep playing well like we did today we should be satisfied.”

Michal Winiarski – Poland captain: “This was a good match for volleyball fans, but not for us. USA played great and deserved to win. End of the sets belonged to them, they stayed more focused. We knew it will be difficult, so far it was the hardest game in this competition. But it’s a long tournament and losses always happen; the most important now is to rest, forget about this match and focus on Italy.”

John Speraw – USA coach: “It was a very close match, the scores of each set show it as well. I think both coaches probably felt like the teams could play better too, especially on serve our best players didn’t have a good day, so that’s one of the things we can work on. Neither team was at their best but both fought hard.”

Stephane Antiga – Poland coach: “We are not surprised that it was a tough game, we knew how good USA can play. We had problem with our serve, but we hoped that maybe we could show a better level overall. It was difficult to stop Anderson, who had a really great match. We didn’t give up after losing 0-2, which is a positive sign.”
