He was a legend for Gremio, playing a major part in the squad that won the 1995 Copa Libertadores.  Later he become one of Europe’s most prolific strikers during his time at FC Porto, Galatasaray and Sporting CP, scoring 266 goals in 274 games for those clubs.

Jardel made his debut for the Brazilian national football team in 1996, making a total of 10 appearances and being selected for the 2001 Copa America. His full name is Mario Jardel de Almeida Ribeiro.

Vitoria Ribeiro is currently representing Portugal at the 2015 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship – Women qualification pool in Puchov, Slovakia.

Our goal is to qualify for the finals from the second place in our pool.  We beat Slovakia in the opening match; then we wished for a better result against very strong Italy, but we failed.  Now we will do our best against Norway,” said the 15-year-old Vitoria.

She started to play volleyball nine years ago, because of her mother who was a former player in Brazil.

One day my mother asked me if I want to play volleyball and I agreed.  I like it very much,” added Vitoria.

Earlier she had also played football.  “I was playing at Sporting, my father’s club, but now I prefer volleyball,” said the young player with a smile.

She is visiting Slovakia for the first time and she likes it.  “We have never seen so much snow in our lives.  We will remember this for a very long time.  Everything is very nice in Slovakia and we really enjoy our time here.  I hope we will be satisfied upon our return to Portugal,” the 180-cm-tall Vitoria Ribeiro concluded.
