Jelgava, Latvia, January 6, 2012. The home girls of Latvia delighted their fans this afternoon at “Zemgales Olympic Center” in Jelgava by routing their opponents from Denmark in three straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 29-27) so that via another win over Cyprus on Sunday they may advance to the second round of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship.

Head coach and 2009 European Beach Volleyball champion Inguna Minusa was evidently happy with the result: “I am very pleased especially because we played as a team. As the girls felt they were going to win, they started making silly mistakes but I am happy that finally they played well also the last section of the third set”.

“This is a unique emotion” adds team captain and the best scorer of the day – with 20 points – Alise Lece.

I have to thank my friends because we really displayed some excellent team work”.

Denmark mentor Olof Bjorkman was not too disappointed: “I think we played a good game today, even better than yesterday with Cyprus. Latvia is a good team; they play a lot from the back row and also the middle of the net, so we had problems to adjust our block. We did not attack as well as we wanted and our reception was less solid than yesterday”.

Liv Nygaar Magnussen paced his side with 12 points.
The first round qualifier in Jelgava comes to a close on Sunday with the hosts playing Cyprus.
