Both the female and male competitions were based on a round-robin league of five teams and Argentina’s women secured the gold medal with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9 and 25-10) win over Colombia in their final match.
“We are very happy, it’s something we came for,” Argentina coach Guillermo Orduna said. “We lost only one match against Brazil, but we were the better team.”
Host nation Chile won the silver medal with victory over pre-tournament favourites Brazil, who finished with bronze. The hosts were roared on by a packed arena and finished with a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25 , 25-21, 26-24) victory.
Argentina’s men started strongly with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-11) win over Colombia and completed the competition unbeaten with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22) defeat of Chile.
Chile’s men added the silver to the one won by their women, while Ecuador claimed the bronze medal.
