Constructed between August 2011 and April 2012, the Crystal Hall was ready well in time for the event it was specially built for – the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. This glamorous building is proudly standing on a man-made peninsula, next to the National Flag Square, protruding into the waters of the world’s largest lake – the Caspian Sea. At night, the Crystal Hall is spectacularly illuminated in constantly changing colors and has become a wonderful addition to the already glorious Baku skyline.
After the Eurovision finals, the 23,000-seater has also hosted concerts of major international pop stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Rihanna and is now ready to make its debut on the international sports scene.
Even this prestigious continental competition is being held as part of a longer-term vision for the Crystal Hall. This fantastic facility is also set to host the volleyball tournament of the inaugural European Games, set to take place next year in Baku.
To make the huge space of the Crystal Hall a cozier arena for a volleyball event, the organizers have found an interesting solution. They have installed giant photos of the coach and the players of Rabita to build an attractive colorful “wall”, cutting off a section around the volleyball court of about 7,000 seats available for the fans of the four participating teams and the general audience. This way the Crystal Hall is all ready for the grand finale of Europe’s strongest women’s club competition.
