Taubate-vs-Itapetininga

EMS Taubaté Funvic achieved the 6th consecutive victory in the 2019/20 Superliga Masculina regular season. The titleholders prevailed over Vôlei UM Itapetininga at home in 4 sets with each one being resolved in the overtime: 3-1 (25-23, 29-27, 24-26, 25-23). Despite their unenviable placement in the charts (9th), Itapetininga turned to be a hard nut to crack for the title favorites. In the last 4 rounds, they played against the top 4 teams in the competition, lost 3 games but took a set from each rival, while they sensationally beat Sesi-SP in the previous round by a 3-0. With the victory, the vice-leaders Taubaté reached 44 points to tie with the leaders Sada Cruzeiro. The Superliga titleholders will now devote to playing the South American Club Championship but will stay in Brazil, knowing the tournament will be held in the city of Contagem (February 11-15) with their fierce rivals Cruzeiro organizing it.

Speaking of Cruzeiro, they recorded the 10th successive victory in Superliga! Led by Argentinean Facundo Conte (15 points), they beat the only team that inflicted them a defeat in the competition so far, Vôlei Renata, by a 3-1. Gabriel Vaccari scored 16 points for the losing side.

Third-placed Sesi, who played without starting setter William Arjona and middle blocker Sidnei Dos Santos Jr. “Sidão“, put playoff hopes of Denk Academy Maringá Vôlei in danger with a 3-1 win. Maringá, who experience major financial difficulties and has already lost 7 players due to wage arrears, came to the match against Sesi with only 2 players on the bench! And from the 3rd set onwards, Maringá remained without both of them due to injuries. What bad luck… The team from the Paraná state is still in the playoff zone (8th placed) but with only one point more than the closest followers Itapetininga.
