At the end of an ongoing edition of the Superliga Masculina, all players of Sesc will be released, while the head coach Giovane Gávio will remain at the institution of Sesc (Brazilian non-profit private institution under which the club operates) to carry out social work in sports! After the match against Sada Cruzeiro (3-1 loss), Sesc surprised by announcing the end of the men’s volleyball team. According to the statement from the Rio de Janeiro club, the team will be disbanded at the end of this edition of the championship. The female project, led by the head coach Bernardinho, that has a much longer tradition (successor of Rexona), will continue to compete.

“Sesc RJ announces the completion of the project for the men’s volleyball team after the end of Superliga 2019-20. By wishing good luck to the players and the coaching staff, the institution thanks everyone for their efforts and dedication in defending the values of Sesc RJ, both inside and outside the court,“ the Sesc institution wrote in the announcement transferred by the Brazilian media.

Despite letting go of the entire men’s squad, including the staff, coach Giovane will remain at the institution and will be responsible for developing socio-educational projects with students from Sesc-RJ, in addition to giving lectures to their families.

In the current Superliga season, the men’s team of Sesc (established in 2016 – won the second division once and state Carioca championship three times) occupies third place in the standings.
