The CEV Board of Administration (BoA) determined the ways the allocation of the spots for the 2020/21 in the European Cups will take place, respecting results and positions of clubs achieved in the last competitive season that in most countries was interrupted due to the outbreak of the pandemic and never resumed.
For example, in terms of participation of clubs in the 2021 edition of the CEV Champions League, the BoA stressed the following:
National Federations will register their teams in accordance with the relevant European Ranking List. Additionally, National Federations will be able to register one extra club per gender. These clubs will start their campaigns from the 1st-3rd Round, based on the criteria of participation in two of the last three editions of the Champions League plus a top-five finish in their respective national championships. The priority in the allocation of these extra slots will be determined based on the above-mentioned ranking. The 4th Round will feature 20 teams per gender (remained the same as usual).
The BoA approved a calendar for the 2020/21 European Cups, which might be changed depending on the evolution of the pandemic across Europe. The Drawing of Lots is due to take place in the second half of August. The 1st-3rd Rounds will consist of home and away matches. Depending on the number of registered teams, the 1st and 2nd Rounds might consist of single round-robin tournaments. A double round-robin is planned for the 4th Round, followed by home and away matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals, while the single-game Super Finals are to be played at one venue for both men and women.
As for exceptional solutions in case the corona crisis worsens, the BoA approved a plan if teams find themselves unable to travel or to host matches. For the 1st-3rd Rounds, there’s the possibility of holding home and away matches at the same venue and forfeit in which case these clubs would move to the CEV Cup. As for the 4th Round, the CEV has left the possibility of switching home and away matches, tournaments instead of round-robin, forfeit, as well “freezing“ pool standings according to the results of the matches played prior to the eventual disruption.
