For the first time in the history of its volleyball, the national team of Cyprus defeated opponents that belong to the very top of European volleyball.
In Pool D, at home in Nicosia, Cyprus prevailed over the 2007 CEV European Championship winners in straight sets, partially 27-25, 25-22, and 25-23 to record the first success in the qualifying tournament. Nikolaos Eleftheriou led Cyprus’ scorers with 18 points. Angelos Alexiou served 5 aces, while Christos Prodromou made 4 kill blocks. Latvia benefited the most from such an outcome.
They isolated themselves at the top of the pool after sweeping Moldova. They are at 3-1 and 9 points, Spain and Moldova are both at 2-2 and 6 points, while Cyprus are at 1-3 and 3 points. Only the pool winners will secure a ticket for the EuroVolley.
