Partly overshadowed by the withdrawal of as many as four national teams, the U18 EuroVolley set off in Italy.
The hosts beat Turkey in the most intense duel of the opening round. The “Azzurri” prevailed over their rivals in Pool I in Marsicovetere after a great comeback: 3-2 (28-30, 16-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-7). Luca Porro, the outside hitter of the volleyball school Colombo Genoa, was Italy’s top scorer with 24 points. In the other match of the same pool, Bulgaria easily beat Belgium.
The first day of the competition in Pool II in Lecce also had a tie-breaker in which Germany recorded a victory over Belarus 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10). Joscha Kunstmann, the middle blocker of the youth team of Hypo Tirol AlpenVolleys Haching, top-scored for the winning side with 21 pints. Poland were confident against the Czech Republic. As a precautionary health measure, the audience isn’t allowed to be present in the halls.
