Even though they have to play one more match in Pool C, whose second tournament they host, Russia’s Zenit Kazan have already secured the promotion to the quarterfinals as the pool leaders. The team commanded by Vladimir Alekno achieved a clean victory over Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys for whom it was a do-or-die match and after which their chances of advancing to the Top 8 are rather slim: 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-14). The Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth top-scored Zenit with 15 points.

In the all-Italian encounter in Pool B, the third in the last 10 days between these two, hosts Sir Sicoma Monin Perugia swept Cucine Lube Civitanova by a 3-0, with 17 points from Cuban-Polish Wilfredo León and 4 aces from the Dutchman Thijs Ter Horst. It was a great performance of the ’Block Devils’ against De Giorgi’s team for whom the encounter had no significance given they secured participation in the quarterfinals yesterday. But, it was significant for Perugia, who came to -3 in the standings in relation to leaders Lube and, in case of beating France’s Tours VB tomorrow in their last challenge, Perugia will reach the knockout stage either as no.1 in the pool or one of the best 3 runners-up across all pools.

The match between Poland’s VERVA Warszawa ORLEN Paliwa and Italy’s Leo Shoes Modena was extremely important for both sides in terms of qualifying for the quarterfinals. It was especially important for Andrea Anastasi’s team, who had to win at least one point to keep their hopes of reaching the next stage alive. And they won 2 points, beating the pool leaders in the tie-break. Such an outcome left both teams in contention for direct qualification to the Top 8. Bartosz Kwolek poured in 25 points for Warszawa.
