Czech Republic and Italy prevailed in highly dramatic semifinal matches of the 2017 CEV Men’s Volleyball U19 European Championship in Győr, Hungary. Reigning title holders Poland got eliminated in a pool stage.

In Eastern European clash, Czechs managed to upset the main gold medal favorites Russia in the semis 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 15-10), already making an enormous progress comparing to the previous edition of the tournament by advancing among the best four teams (settled at 7th place in 2015 European Championship). Marek Šotola, the opposite of the new Czech title holders VK Jihostroj České Budějovice, highlighted Czech NT with 25 points. Vladislav Spiridonov, receiver of the youth team of Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, was the best scorer in „Zbornaya“ with 18 points.

Italy will have a chance to fix the impression from the last edition of the tournament when they lost final to Poland. „Azzurri“ beat Turkey in another semifinal tie-breaker, partially 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9, thanks to 19 points (7 blocks!) from Lorenzo Cortesia, middle blocker of a low ranked team Volley Treviso (former Sisley Treviso, four-time Champions League winners). Galatasaray opposite Adis Lagumdžija confirmed his class by scoring 24 points for Turkish NT.

The final match of #EuroVolleyU19M between Czech Republic and Italy is scheduled for 18:30 CET in „Széchenyi István University Sports Hall“ in Győr.
