These two Italian powerhouses made a Pool A spectacle to remember in front of packed stands at Palasport Evangelisti Perugia and those that were watching the game on TV.
Perugia fans nearly had their gymnasium collapsed when Lorenzo Bernardi’s protégés made an epic comeback after being two sets down against national league rivals Lube. The time-out which Bernardi called at 17-19 in the third set changed the course of an encounter since Perugia players began to dance on the floor afterward. Perugia established domination in the fourth set (11-8, 18-13, 23-17), while the fifth set was also a one-way street for the hosts (8-4, 11-6).
The Serbian bomber Aleksandar Atanasijević was a hero of Perugia as he tallied 34 points (4 aces), surpassing Osmany Juantorena’s display of 24 points (5 aces).
