The Russian side Belogorie Belgorod stamped Asseco Resovia Rzeszów of Poland at home in the 1st leg of the 2018 CEV Cup semifinals by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17), needing to claim two sets in the rematch to find their way to the final.
Resovia players looked quite indifferent on the court which was reflected with the fact neither of them had double digits when it comes to the points scored. Resovia had a poor attack, only 37% as a team, without a single kill block on their account. One of the reasons for this might be the shortened preparation time for the match due to a problem with the plane. Konstantin Bakun topped Belogorie with 14 points. The Bulgarian Nikolay Nikolov made 5 kill blocks.
The rematch between the two sides, who won their respective national championship 15 teams combined (Belogorie 8, Resovia 7), is scheduled for March 20.
The Turkish Ziraat Bankası Ankara prevailed over Calzedonia Verona of Italy on the road in the other semifinal by a 3-1 to heal the wounds which they got by early elimination in the national league playoffs. Italian outside hitter Oleg Antonov scored 22 points (2 aces, 3 kill blocks) for Ziraat. Vahit Emre Savaş added 4 kill blocks. In Verona, American Thomas Jaeschke delivered 12 points.
