VNL 2019 W: Bjelica routes Serbia to 6th successive win over Russia, teenager Stysiak shines for Poland against Belgium

The reigning world champions Serbia downed big rivals Russia on Day 2 of Week 3 in the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League.

Serbia continued their winning streak against Russia (6th win in a row) at major world level tournaments as they beat them in four sets in Pool 12 in Kortrijk (Belgium) after recovering from a set down. Serbia established huge domination over Russian in the block (17-9) and service (13-5). Ana Bjelica scored 27 points for the winning side, including 5 kill blocks and 4 aces. Katarina Lazović also served 4 aces, while Maja Aleksić set up 6 kill blocks. Kseniya Parubets tallied 17 points for “Zbornaya“. Ekaterina Efimova made 4 kill blocks. By suffering a defeat against Serbia, who are at 5-3 in the tournament, Russia lost as much as six successive matches and now have a 1-7 record.

Pool 12 hosts Belgium provided strong resistance to Poland but could not take more than one set to the rivals who now have a 6-2 record. The “Yellow Tigers“ are at 4-4. An 18-year-old opposite hitter Magdalena Stysiak highlighted for Poland with 24 points (4 aces). Britt Herbots, Celine Van Gestel, and Kaja Grobelna scored 14 apiece for Belgium.
