Iran U21 national team seized their premier world championship title after prevailing over Italy in the final of the 2019 edition of the tournament: 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) in 2 hours and 26 minutes of a play. Thus, Italy were stopped on the last step toward winning the gold medal in this age category for the 4th time. This was their first U21 final after 26 years, while it was Iran’s first final at all and it brought them second-ever medal in the tournament (previously they won bronze in 2007).

The Asian side was led on the court by Paykan Tehran opposite hitter Porya Yali (23 points) and captain Amirhossein Esfandiar (22) who scored nearly 53% of all Iran’s points. The latter, who is also a member of Paykahn Tehran, included 4 aces in his display. He was named MVP, enlarging his youth MVP collection after being recognized the best player in the 2017 FIVB U19 World Championship (Iran also won the gold medal). These 2 players created a comeback of their team in the 3rd set. Iran trailed by 4 on several occasions and were even 21-23 behind before making a 4-0 run to close the set.

Consar Ravenna outside hitter Daniele Lavia top-scored for Italy with 19 points while Kristian Gamba, the newcomer in the country’s Division 3 side Pallavolo Motta TV, scored 18.
