Imoco Volley Conegliano’s win in Pool A was followed by the success of the big rivals from Serie A, Igor Gorgonzola Novara, in Pool B. Mostly due to Zhu Ting’s performance, the European champions got swept from the court in the first two sets against one of the two teams playing the tournament on home soil, Tianjin Bohai Bank. Most of the fans in the Olympic Sports Center started to celebrate the win of the Asian super squad, reinforced with several China National Team members specifically for the event, but the Champions League titleholders had something else on their mind. Serbian Jovana Brakočević shifted gears of Novara’s ride and eventually earned the MVP of the match award, apart from scoring game-high 23 points. As for Tianjin, Zhu Ting and Li Yingying tallied 20 points apiece, while Yuan Xinyue made as many as 7 kill blocks.
Brazilian champions Itambé Minas lost the first two sets, reacted in the third, but it wasn’t enough to outplay the official hosts of the tournament, Guangdong Evergrande, in the closing of Day 1 in Pool A. The third set was marked by a highly unpleasant situation when Minas libero Léia Silva crashed into the LED sign at the bottom of the court while trying to save a point. The match was interrupted for a few minutes so that medical help can be provided to the player. Luckily, Léia was able to resume playing. Russian Tatyana Kosheleva top-scored for Guangdong with 28 points. Bruna Honório chipped in with 15 points for Minas.
