The Dominican Republic claimed the last vacant spot in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament and will play against the USA there. At the closing of the preliminary stage in Pool A, in the direct duel for a spot in the Top 8, the Caribbean side downed the host nation Japan by a 3-1 (25-10, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19). Whoever recalls how Japan played in the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League is certainly surprised that it is excluded from the final phase of the Olympics, having only one win in five matches on its account.

With 17 points, Prisilla Rivera led four Dominicans who reached double figures on the scorecards. Bethania De La Cruz set up 5 blocks. Sarina Koga tallied 22 points for Japan and had 81 % reception (17/21).

Brazil dominated (it is even too light description) Kenya, confirmed leadership of Pool A, and will face the Russian Olympic Committee team for a spot in the semifinals. ’Seleção’ conceded only 34 points in the entire match!
