In the first match, Belgium outclassed Cuba 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-11), showing composure in a tight opening set before dominating the remainder of the encounter. Led by solid attacking and disciplined defense, the Belgians never allowed Cuba to find momentum, quickly asserting themselves as contenders in the group.

Later, Italy lived up to their reputation as world No.1 and reigning Olympic champions, sweeping Slovakia 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17). Despite some early resistance, the Italians raised their level when it mattered, with star opposite Paola Egonu leading the scoring and young outside hitter Stella Nervini making an impressive debut. Slovakia, competing in their first-ever World Championship, fought bravely and had standout moments through opposite Karin Šunderlíková, who scored 12 points, but ultimately couldn’t keep pace with the tournament favorites.

Both winning sides emphasized the importance of starting the tournament with confidence. Italy’s captain Anna Danesi admitted there were nerves in the opener but stressed that the team is focused on improving with each match. Belgium, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their clean performance against a Cuban side still searching for rhythm on the international stage.

The Pool B action continues on Sunday, August 24, when Italy face Cuba and Slovakia take on Belgium. With early victories secured, both Italy and Belgium will look to build momentum.
