The United States defeated Türkiye in a dramatic five-set Volleyball Nations League contest in Osaka, Japan, securing a hard-fought victory after more than two hours of play.
USA showed resilience after losing the opening set, responding with key wins in the second and third sets. The third set proved especially important, as the Americans held their nerve to claim it 29-27 and take control of the match.
Türkiye forced a deciding set by winning the fourth set 25-21, led by a strong scoring display from Melissa Vargas. Vargas finished as the match’s top scorer with 35 points, including 32 from attack.
However, the United States produced their best volleyball in the final set. Strong blocking and balanced attacking helped USA pull away for a 15-8 victory. The Americans finished with 14 blocks, compared with Türkiye’s six, a decisive advantage at the net.
Avery Skinner and Logan Eggleston each scored 19 points for the United States, while Jordan Thompson added 17. USA’s ability to spread the scoring across several players helped offset Türkiye’s attacking advantage.
