It turned that losing to Banca Valsabbina Millenium Brescia a few days ago was not by accident as European champions Igor Gorgonzola Novara nearly suffered the same fate in an away match of Round 10 in the 2019/20 Lega Pallavolo Serie A Femminile regular season against Il Bisonte Firenze. The match was played in advance because on the day when all the other Round 10 matches are to be played (December 8), Novara will just return from the FIVB Club World Championship.
It is hard to play competitive volleyball when you don’t have a single opposite hitter in the squad. Novara head coach Barbolini tried to compensate for the absence of Mlakar and Brakočević-Canzian (both injured) by putting Stefana Veljković to the opposite hitter position. But Serbian player, whose nominal position is a middle blocker, did not manage to properly perform this role which resulted in losing the first two sets to Il Bisonte. After that, Barbolini returned Veljković to play on her natural position and put outside hitter Chiara Di Iulio to play as the opposite. And that is when things went into the right direction for the Serie A runners-up: 3-2 (25-27, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-11).
Bulgarian Elitsa Vasileva stood out for Novara in the scoresheet with 23 points but through only 35% attack success rate (22/63). American Megan Courtney made 86% reception (28 digs, 61% perfect). With 15 points, Sylvia Nwakalor led six Il Bisonte’s double-digit players.
