The setter of the Soviet Union National Team in the golden age of the female volleyball in the country that no longer exists (1980’s and 1990’s), Irina Kirillova, will interrupt her retirement that lasted for 9 years and join Italian team of Assicar Novara!
Gian Luca Pasini reported in his blog that a one-time Olympic champion (1988 Seoul Games), one-time FIVB World Championship winner (1990, named MVP) and 2-time CEV European Championship winner (1989 and 1991) decided to help the team that competes in Serie C (regional league) who remained without the backup setter.
Kirillova, who received Croatian citizenship in the mid-’90s and defended the colors of its national team later, has retired in 2011. The last team for which she competed was also the team in which she started her professional career – Uralochka-NTMK. Kirillova is married to famous Italian coach Giovanni Caprara, to whom she assisted in winning the 2006 FIVB World Championship with Russia Women, and has been living in Italy since 2017.
