Italy appoints new head coach ahead of U20 European qualifier

by WoV

Ten days before the second round qualifier that is due to take place in Porto Potenza Picena from April 25 through 27, the Italian Volleyball Federation announced that Michele Totire will replace Marco Bonitta at the helm of their U20 men’s national team. Totire was Bonitta’s assistant coach back in 2012 when Italy won gold at the last edition of the U20 Men European Championship held in Gdynia, Poland. Bonitta has returned to coach the women’s national team with the aim to win a medal at the FIVB Volleyball World Championship coming up later this year in Italy.

The 38-year old Totire debuted as assistant coach in Italy’s second division back in 2005, and one year later moved up to the Serie A1 while working for the likes of Prisma Volley TARANTO. Totire worked for some other clubs competing in Italy’s first and second division (Yoga FORLI’ and Canadiens MANTOVA) before continuing his career with the Club Italia and Italy’s junior national team that won gold at the 2012 European Championship in Gdynia.

After Ukraine’s withdrawal from the U20 Men European Championship, Italy is set to play the national teams of Austria and Poland in Porto Potenza Picena. The winner of this single round robin tournament will qualify for the Final Round of the U20 European Championship that will take place from August 29 to September 6 in Brno (Czech Republic) and Nitra (Slovakia).
