Italy beat the 2015 continental Championship runners-up Slovenia in their first match after the 2017 FIVB World League, which they finished as the last placed team in the Preliminary Round rankings (their worst ever ranking in the history of the tournament).

In the training center of the Italian Federation in Cavalese, the „Azzurri“ achieved a straight-set win over 2017 FIVB World League Group 2 winners Slovenia, partially 25-22, 25-16, 25-15, having a 63% of the team attacking efficiency.

Luca Vettori and Filippo Lanza scored 13 points each in Italy, while Tine Urnaut made eight points for Slovenia.
