For the second game in a row, the title favorites in the 2017/18 Italian men’s volleyball championship SuperLega UnipolSai, Azimut Modena, showed weaknesses that could easily be punished in the playoffs.

Driven by the fact they must get away from the play-out zone as soon as possible, Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia made a superhuman effort to prevail against Azimut Modena in Round 22. But, despite the fact they were two sets up and two points ahead in the middle of the tie-break, Vibo succumbed to the title favorites.

As for Modena, they remained the third-placed, having three wins and nine points less than the leaders Sir Safety Conad Perugia and one win and two points behind the second-ranked Cucine Lube Civitanova.

Without Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth and Giulio Sabbi for the whole match, and Slovenian Tine Urnaut from the second set, it was kind of expected that Modena will struggle tonight. Even the outside hitter backup Andrea Argenta was unable to help Modena as he is recovering from the injury. In the absence of the above-mentioned players, the Dutch Maarten van Garderen stood out with 22 points (3 kill blocks), while Earvin Ngapeth‘s brother Swan Ngapeth added 20 points. Daniele Mazzone contributed with 5 kill blocks (13 points).

Vibo were also weakened as the U.S. opposite Benjamin Patch remained on the bench in the first two sets before coming in as the substitute in the next three sets. His replacement in the lineup, the 19-year-old Pole Damian Domagała, highlighted Vibo with 21 points. The Belgian Pieter Verhees made 5 kill blocks (12 points).
