After the United States defeated Guatemala in five sets, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico opened the competition with victories as well.
Puerto Rico started the competition at the NORCECA Continental Men’s Championship with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Canada. Pelegrin Vargas and Gabriel García led Puerto Rico with 11 points each. Xander Ketrzynski was Canada’s top scorer with 12 points while Brandon Koppers added 11.
Defending champion Cuba defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-17, 29-31, 25-21, 25-19) for a successful start in pool B. Cuban Jesus Herrera with 18 points was the top scorer of the match, while Miguel Angel López added 17 points and José Israel Masso 14 points.
In the last game of the first day, Mexico defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-8). Mexican Josué de Jesús López with 18 points was the top scorer of the match.
