In the concluding matches of the pool round at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, Brazil clinched a dramatic five-set victory over Cuba to secure a direct semifinal entry, while Colombia earned their quarterfinal place by overcoming Mexico.
Brazil’s men’s volleyball team faced a formidable challenge against Cuba but emerged victorious with a 3-2 win (25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 25-27, 18-16). This intense match solidified Brazil’s position at the top of Pool A, earning them a coveted spot in the upcoming Friday semifinals. Cuba’s performance, while strong, leaves them with a 2-1 record, positioning them to compete in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Brazil’s success can be partly attributed to the impressive 37 points scored off Cuban errors. Brazilian opposite Darlan soared as the game’s top scorer with 29 points. Despite their efforts, Cuba’s comeback push in the later sets fell short, and critical errors in the final moments sealed their fate.
On the other hand, Colombia’s decisive 3-0 victory against Mexico (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) paved their way to the quarterfinals. Colombia’s captain Gustavo Larrahondo dominated the scoreboard with 24 points, supported by Andrés Piza’s ten attack points. Though Mexico’s Luis Hernández and Axel Tellez put forth a valiant effort, it wasn’t enough to deter Colombia’s advance.
