The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) made a decision not to send athletes, which includes men’s volleyball national team, to the Tokyo Olympic Games if it’s held this summer! The reason for this is a pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, which has caused almost all sports in the world to be postponed or canceled. The leaders of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) earlier claimed that postponement of the Olympics is out of the question. However, they announced on Sunday night that they would consider postponing the Games. For such a decision, they gave themselves a four-week deadline.

“The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), backed by their Athletes’ Commissions, National Sports Organizations and the Government of Canada, have made the difficult decision to not send Canadian teams to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2020. The COC and CPC urgently call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to postpone the Games for one year and we offer them our full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games will bring. While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community,” the COC published.

Just a bit after Canada’s, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has made the same decision, instructing athletes to prepare for 2021. Australia won’t have representatives in volleyball at the Olympics in Tokyo. The rumor is that Poland will join these two countries.

In case of not postponing the event, for the first time since the Cold War and two Olympic Games boycotts (USA’s of 1980 Moscow and Soviet’s of 1984 Los Angeles), some national Olympic committees informed the IOC that they wouldn’t send their athletes to the Games.

Canada is a big sporting nation that won 22 medals in the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (4 golds, 3 silvers, and 15 bronzes). Australia won even more medals four years ago, 29 (8 + 11 + 10). Accordingly to the current schedule, this year’s Olympic Games are to begin in on July 24 and end on August 9.
