In accordance with the agreement with the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Japan’s Government, the IOC determined new dates for the Tokyo Olympics postponed to 2021. New dates coincide with the dates set for the event that supposed to be held this year. Namely, the Tokyo Games in 2021 will start on July 23, ending on August 8. The Games in 2020 should have started on July 24 and last until August 9.

The IOC stressed that it was supported in this decision by all the National Olympic Committees, saying that new dates will “give all involved in the organization of the Games and health authorities the maximum time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.“
