The players of Belgium national team, more commonly known as “Red Dragons” in their home country, are ready to emulate their countrywomen who a couple of weeks ago made the semis of the EuroVolley and eventually claimed bronze at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin. On Wednesday evening they will play 2011 European champions Serbia for a spot in the semifinals coming up on Saturday at Parken stadium in Copenhagen and their adventure has drawn much attention also from the media.

As they traveled to Denmark for the 2013 CEV VELUX EuroVolley, Belgium had stated their goal was to make it among the top eight. This past summer they had swept all of their matches to win the CEV Volleyball European League and get the right boost of confidence for this Championship. Their rise to the top was confirmed this past Sunday as they beat Italy 3:2 to finish first in Pool A and advance to the 1/4 finals thereby skipping the Playoffs and enjoying an additional day of rest.

“There is a good atmosphere in the group and the players are playing with passion and a lot of enthusiasm” said the Belgian media attending the training session of their heroes on Wednesday morning. “They do not feel any pressure and they just take it match after match. Of course they would like to crown their run by making it to the final weekend at Parken stadium in Copenhagen”.

They also know that their game with Serbia will be very tough. They know their opponents quite well for many of the players starring tonight (Sam Deroo, Bram Van den Dries, Pieter Verhees for Belgium, Marko Podraščanin, Dragan Stanković for Serbia, to name only a few) have regularly crossed their ways in the Italian national league.

If they beat the 2011 gold medalists, the “Red Dragons” will follow in the footsteps of the “Yellow Tigers” and make sure Volleyball makes the headlines once more back home in Belgium.
