The return of the Cuba Men’s Volleyball National Team to the big global scene after many years didn’t go as planned by the fans and media in this Caribbean nation.
The hopes of the fans and public in Cuba for the participation of their men’s national team in the 2022 FIVB World Championship were high and went as far as a medal, especially after three titles Nicolás Vives’ guys took this summer in various regional and international events. The one in the FIVB Challenger Cup was very important as it gave Cuba the chance to compete in the Volleyball Nations League for the first time ever and marked a breakthrough for the national team on the international scene. The result in the World Champs, still ongoing, flattened the euphoria – even though they lost to European champions Italy – as the Cuban path ended in the Round of 16.
The change of the head coach seems to be inevitable. According to Gian Luca Pasini, foreign experts are offering their services to the Cuban federation for free. At least two offers have arrived to coach the men’s national team only with prizes – one from Australia and the other from Argentina.
