Pool A will be wrapped up by Cuba if they defeat hosts Serbia in Novi Sad on Thursday by either 3-0 or 3-1. The victory will put them on 26 points, too far ahead for the chasing Serbs, who would need to win all three of their matches within four sets and hope Cuba fail to pick up a point.

Defending champions Russia are already out of the tournament having not accumulated enough points to reach top spot or be classed as one of the best second-placed sides. They will be playing for nothing but glory this weekend.

However, Japan will be looking to add a few precious points to their haul if they want to avoid the World League playoffs. They currently sit on three points but will be keeping an eye on Portugal’s results in Pool D and Korea’s in Pool C. They are currently in a dangerous position so will want to clinch at least a win to give them a fighting chance of surviving.
