It took more than two hours to complete the exciting match with both teams playing high level volleyball to define the top place in Pool A.

Brazilian Wallace de Souza recorded tournament-high marks in both scoring and aces with 32 and 6 respectively only to see his side succumbing at the end against the team of Emanuele Birarelli, who finished with six blocks to match his own competition-high.

In the last contest of Tuesday, the local Al Rayyan Sport Club scored an easy straight-set victory over Tigres de Nuevo Leon of Mexico. Both sides were already out of contention in men’s Pool A.

In the women’s field, Rabita Baku qualified in second place of Pool A to join Brazil’s Sollys Nestle in the semifinal round as they overcame Bohai Bank of China in four frames.

Wednesday’s schedule has men’s Zenit Kazan of Russia versus Zamalek of Egypt at 15:00 followed by women’s Fenerbahce Istanbul against Kenya Prisons at 17:00. PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland meet Al-Arabi Doha at 19:00.

Trentino Diatec 3, Sada Cruzeiro 2
Three-time defending champions Trentino Diatec of Italy won an epic battle against Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil prevailing in five thrilling sets (25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 19-25, 21-19) in the decisive match for top place in men’s Pool A.

Matteo Burgsthaler scored with a block against Wallace De Souza for the final point of the long battle that lasted 2 hours and 4 minutes. Trentino led in blocks 13-8 while Sada Cruzeiro held the advantage in aces 10-6.

Jan Stokr and Osmany Juantorena led Trentino with 21 and 20 points respectively with the latter totaling three aces. Emanuele Birarelli registered 6 blocks among his 13 points while Matey Kaziyski contributed 11 tallies. De Souza had a tournament-high 32 points, including six aces and two blocks. Yoandy Leal added 12 and Marcos Leal and Filipe Ferraz each charted 11 points

Al Rayyan 3, Tigres de Nuevo Leon 0
Al Rayyan Sport Club of Qatar defeated Tigres de Nuevo Leon of Mexico 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) in a match of men’s Pool A between winless teams. The winners finished with 10 blocks to 4 of the defeated side and blanked the opposition 6-0 in service aces.

Mikko Oivanen led the offense of Al Rayyan with 10 points as the only player with double figures in the match. David Lee added 8 points, including three blocks and two aces, while Georgi Bratoev had four aces. Samuel Córdova finished with 6 points for Tigres.

Rabita Baku 3, Bohai Bank 1
Defending champions Rabita Baku of Azerbaijan advanced to the semifinal phase of the women’s tournament by ousting Bohai Bank of China in four sets (25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21) in their deciding match of Pool A. Rabita Baku held a 14-8 margin in the blocking category and edged Bohai Bank 6-5 in the service winners charts.

Sanja Starovic led the winners with a match-high 20 points, including three blocks, followed by Foluke Akinradewo who finished with six blocks and 16 points. Dobriana Rabadzhieva had four aces among her 13 points while Angelina Hubner-Grun chipped in with 10. Zhang Xiaoting and Chen Liyi topped Bohai Bank with 15 and 14 points respectively. Yi Na collected 12 points and Li Ying tallied 11 points.
