León waited 2 years for this day. From July 24, 2019, one of the best Volleyball players in the world has the right to appear in official matches for Poland national team.

León received Polish citizenship in 2015 on the basis of a marriage with the Polish citizen, which was 3 years after he gave up on playing for the national team of his home country Cuba and moved to Europe. It is noteworthy to say that León’s debut for Cuba was in 2007 when he was only 14! The official document in which the Polish Volleyball Federation (PZPS) requested International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) a change of nationality for a 25-year-player were submitted in 2017. From that moment, a 2-year waiting period required by the FIVB regulations began. And it ended today.

León is a part of the group of players that remained to train for the Qualifications for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the training camp in the city of Zakopane while the other group competed in the 2019 FIVB Nations League. It is expected that Cuban-born player makes his debut in the match against the Netherlands this Saturday, July 27, in Opole.

This is wrong he should not be able to play for Polands National team. He is from Cuba as the other two players are returning to Cuba to play for them. Just because he married a Polish women doesn’t make him Polish! There should be no less than a four year wait to see if the marriage works or is a marriage. We have spoken out on this issue prior just like Brazil players did till they to now have a Cuba player. That being said said I believe, think he to is returning to Cuba just to play for their team.

Re: @thomas

None of them should be allowed to play for their new countries. These are all dangerous precedents that lead to simply buying players for national teams (some of those Cubans probably are bought). You can see that happen in some different sports already, for example in futsal – Russia vs Azerbeijan game in a major championship, but there is actually just Brazilians on the court playing against each other. Is that somehow a good thing?

Joey C – Are you serious, or just jealous?

‘Just because he married a Polish women doesn’t make him Polish!’
The reality is that he married a Polish women, and this is making him Polish.
