Firstly, we talked with Micelli about the last season. Despite losing in the Turkish playoff semifinal, his leaving of Eczacıbaşı was a surprise. So, we were curious to find out what were the main reasons for his decision.
“It was for nothing special. After 4 years of working in Eczacıbaşı it was the time for me to go, so that me and the club could change targets. Thus, we decided to go different ways. Together, we won 2 Super Cups, 2 Turkish Cups, 1 Turkish League and we reached F4 of Champions League. I was only sad for that… because I couldn’t gift Champions League to my Turkish club and friends”.
What are your impressions about your new club – Trefl?
“We are working very hard and I’m very glad to find again the right people to work with and a club that’s very professional. PGE Atom Trefl Sopot will be one of the best clubs in Europe, we only need time, patience and passion to build our philosophy and our way.”
What are the chances of Trefl to reach top spot in the standings and to win a title?
“If I look the actual ranking, it will be difficult to reach Police in 1st place… We need a mistake from them in some difficult match and they only have one – against Muszyna. For me, now, it’s more important to build a team and take care of it… in playoff, all the teams start from the same level. I’m sure we can put all teams in trouble, even Police. So, I believe that we can be the Polish champions.”
You are expecting a tough match against Imoco Volley Conegliano in the second leg of CEV Cup’s quarterfinal. Can you eliminate them?
“We can do that and for sure, it will be a tough match. We’ll have to take advantage of playing at home, I mean on sports hall and fans and to beat them 3-0 or 3-1. After that, we’ll to think of playing the Golden set… So, step by step.”
What is your status in the Italian national team?
“I was working in Italian national team from 2002 till 2010, after that I took 4 years of summer rest to have more time with my family and to be ready for the next season, but I went on all important tournaments because I didn’t want to lose chances to go back and to see new things and players.”
Your compatriot with whom you had battles in the Turkish league, Giovanni Guidetti, left the national team of Germany. What do you think of the results he had with them?
“What I understood is – they worked very hard in the past, had good results and played nice volleyball to watch. I was reading in the past period that they had some problems, but after being a coach for such a long time – it’s normal. And to change the course – it’s normal, too. In my opinion, Guidetti and the German national team had very good results.”
There are several candidates to replace Guidetti, mostly German coaches, but… what do you think of the idea that you might replace him?
“It’s very good idea, but it will not come from me.”
If they offer you a job, would you accept it?
“For me, it would be the honor to have that kind of chance and I feel positive about it. So, I will say ‘Yes’, but we also need to know what is the project and philosophy of the German Federation, what they want and what they need… So, good luck for the next coach of German national team!”
