Will Wilfredo Leon play for Poland at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016? It is possible, but not very likely.

A lot of conditions have to be fulfilled before Wilfredo Leon gets the permission to play for Poland. The article published on sportowefakty.pl explains the situation with the Cuban international.

The Polish Volleyball Federation firstly needs to send all necessary documents to the Cuban Volleyball Federation and then to wait for their approval. Then everything depends on the good will of people from the Cuban Volleyball Federation. They can send the letter of approval immediately, after a few weeks, after a few months, or to not send it at all! In that case, Polish Volleyball Federation would have to contact NORCECA to intervene.

When the Polish Volleyball Federation gets the letter of approval (whether from the Cuban Volleyball Federation or NORCECA), then they need to send all necessary papers to FIVB and to wait for their approval. There should not be any problem, but the FIVB rules strictly say that the player can’t play for the other country two years after making the initial request to change the national team.

As Wilfredo Leon made initial request to join the Polish national team in 2015, it means that he would be able to debut for Poland in 2017.

There is an option that FIVB makes an exception in this case, because Wilfredo Leon has not been played for Cuba for years, but that is not likely.
