The total of 21 blocks recorded by Russia was a valuable commodity in the victory over Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Russia coachIury MarichevThis tournament is more difficult than the European Championships. We have tough games here. As a team we only had four practices together, so there was not enough time for the attackers and setters to work together. We had 21 blocks in the match tonight, so I am very happy about this.

Dominican Republic coachMarcos KwiekIt was a tough match for us. They are very strong on blocks. We made some mistakes on receiving. I felt that we were a little short on the offensive end. There is no time for regrets. We have to start thinking about the next match.

Russia captainEkaterina Pankova: We played as one tonight. We lost the second set but came back together. I think we played better tonight than in yesterday’s match.

Russia playerLiubov ShashkovaWe came here to win. It was not a stable game for us as we won the first set then lost the second. We won in the end because of our teamwork and ability on the high block.

Dominican Republic captainBethania De La Cruz: It was a tough match. We started out very poorly and had no rhythm. We played better in the second set. We lost focus in the third set. It was unfortunate that we lost.
