After a three-year hiatus, Alekno, who previously refrained from joining the team to stay loyal to Kazan, has now signed a contract with Zenit. His appointment follows a tumultuous period for the club, which has seen frequent changes in its coaching staff, with three different head coaches in the last three seasons alone.

Zenit St. Petersburg, backed by Gazprom, has struggled to leverage its financial clout effectively, often mismanaging resources and inflating player contracts. The club has been without a trophy since its inception despite its substantial budget, which at its peak reached  around 14.000.000,00 $. Under Alekno’s leadership, there is renewed hope that the club can finally capitalize on its potential and shift from perennial contenders to champions.
