In the opening game of the tournament held in “Tancredo Neves” gymnasium, Argentinean runners-up Bolívar swept away rookies, the Peruvian side CD Unilever de Perú, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-12) in Pool B. Interestingly, half of the squad of Unilver consists of university players. Bulgarian Todor Aleksiev from Bolívar was the top scorer of the match with 13 points.
Six-time consecutive champions of Argentina UPCN made their debut in this year’s edition of the ‘Sudamericano’ with an authoritative win over Bolivian title holders San Martín 3-0, also in Pool B.
The hosts Montes Claros had no difficulties as well, closing Day 1 with a straight-set victory over Club Atlético Bohemios in less than an hour in Pool A. The Brazilian team left Uruguayans on single digits in the second set.
Trophy defenders of the South American Club Championship, Brazilian Sada Cruzeiro, will play their first match on February 23, against Montes Claros, since their opening Pool A match was canceled. Their rivals USL Montjoly from the French Guiana, who are, by the way, last in the club ranking of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), had to withdraw from the competition due to lack of funding. The South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV) decided not to financially support Montjoly’s participation despite giving the team from a country that is part of France, and also the European Union, a wild card earlier.
