Türk Hava Yolları stood in the way of Fenerbahçe Opet’s invincibility in the 2021/22 Turkish Women’s Volleyball Championship.
THY startled vice-champions Fenerbahçe in Round 5 of the 2021/22 Misli.com Sultanlar Ligi. The win of the club behind which stands the national airline company Turkish Airlines over ’Yellow Angels’ was not expected, let alone a straight-set win. Canadian Kiera Van Ryk made sure that Fenerbahçe go home with no points nor sets in their pocket, scoring 21 points. American Madison Kingdon Rishel made 83% reception (24 digs, 58% perfect).
This season might turn into a disappointing one for the most titled club in the Turkish league, Eczacıbaşı Dynavit. Few of its fans remember the last time their club had two defeats in the first five rounds of the Sultanlar Ligi as it is now. ’The Tigers’ succumbed to Galatasaray HDI Sigorta 2-3 (20-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 9-15), which scored four consecutive triumphs after the defeat in the opening round. The 18-year-old Romanian Alexia Ioana Căruțașu notched 22 points for Galatasaray.
PTT’s dream season continued. The team sponsored by the country’s national postal service, which has a very short history, is at five out of five and the only undefeated side in the competition. Belgian Hélène Rousseaux (18 points) and Brazilian Amanda Campos (70% reception /10 digs, 50% perfect) led the Ankara side to a 3-0 victory over Yeşilyurt.
