CEV junior W: Cyprus shuts out Liechtenstein, closes in on gold medal

On Saturday the home girls of Cyprus thrashed Liechtenstein 3:0 (25-13, 25-7, and 25-17) to close in on the gold medal of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Small Countries Division. In combination with the defeat of Luxembourg in the hands of Scotland earlier in the day, Cyprus now needs just two sets in its last match of the tournament to clinch the gold medal for the first time in the history of the competition.

Cyprus put on tremendous pressure with their serving, scoring 19 aces and had exceptional attacking with 30 kills out of 54 attempts and for the second day running Eleana Petrou was top scorer for the home side, this time with 19 points.

We played an excellent match, but we still have one more to go tomorrow” said the head coach of Cyprus, Manolis Roumeliotis. “We still need to give our best against Luxembourg to achieve what we are striving for”. 

We are very happy for our second successive victory, but we do not rest on our laurels and we promise to be even more serious tomorrow against Luxembourg” added Cyprus team captain, Ioanna Leonidou

The competition concludes on Sunday evening in Limassol, with Scotland playing Liechtenstein at 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) and Cyprus taking on Luxembourg at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT).
