The USA’s head coach John Speraw admitted after the final match of the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League that whenever his team thought they seized the momentum, Russia did something better to out-shine it.

“We just got beat by a team that was a little bit better than us tonight. There were some ebbs and flows where I thought we were the better team. Then they just made a lot of plays from the service line. We didn’t serve the ball as well as we needed to give ourselves scoring opportunities. They got more efficient offensively as the night went on,” Speraw said for the USA Volleyball Federation (USAV) website.

No matter how many changes he made in order to improve his team’s chances to win the game (in the 1st set, Muagututia replaced Russell at outside hitter; in the 3rd set, Jendryk replaced Smith at middle blocker; in the fourth set, Patch replaced Muagututia and was moved to opposite hitter, while Anderson returned to playing outside hitter), it was in vain.

“Garrett (Muagututia) did a good job of passing, but we needed more punch on the left side. I tried moving Matty (Anderson) over to the left where he is comfortable. But it just didn’t work,” Speraw stated.
