The story of the China Women’s Volleyball National Team player Ren Kaiyi very much intrigued media in her home country but also in Poland because that’s supposed to be the new destination of her career.

At the beginning of this month, Kaiyi was hired by the Polish vice-champions Grot Budowlani Łódź and she would be the first-ever Chinese player in the female top division. In order to have her in the team as soon as possible, the Liga Siatkówki Kobiet club arranged for the player a transfer from Dubai (UAE) to Belgrade (Serbia) and then to Poland. But nearly a month after that, Kaiyi is still in the Serbian capital. Reasons why Kaiyi didn’t get her visa to Poland until today are partly the coronavirus outbreak, partly the lack of paperwork.

As the 28-year-old player explained for Sina, upon arriving in Belgrade on February 7, she went directly to the embassy to get the visa to go to Poland the next day, but there was a delay when she was in Dubai. Kaiyi was told to stay in some hotel before the paperwork is done.

In the meantime, Kaiyi learned that she will have to start the process of obtaining a visa from scratch. After completing it, which was in mid-February, the outside hitter still couldn’t go to Poland as she was asked to write a statement about her whereabouts in the last month in order to check her health. Kaiyi also needed to prepare a proof of her incomes. The athlete finished all that and finally, on February 18, she was arranged to fly to Poland via Turkey. However, Kaiyi wasn’t allowed to travel because, according to the latest regulations, getting a visa for Turkey would require her to be quarantined first. Since the 2018 FIVB World Championship bronze medalist didn’t want to go into the isolation, she was proposed to train with a local team to stay in shape before this confusion resolves and she joins Budowlani.

The name of the club that helped Kaiyi to overcome the transitional period and allowed her to train is Radnički Belgrade, competing in the second division. They announced it on the website.
