Famous manager explains what’s happening with players’ salaries in major leagues

Matijašević, the owner of the LZSport Pro managerial agency compared the way players were paid in several men’s major leagues in Europe during this time of suspension or cancelation of these competitions.

He praised Polish PlusLiga who sorted things out with players in an amicable way:

“Congrats to PlusLiga clubs and players. They almost all agreed in an amicable way in regard to contracts and Coronavirus situation. Nice display of reason and mutual understanding.”

In France, the government will help clubs:

“A nice system in France: the government is paying 84% of the players’ net salary from March. Cumulated, it means that players will get approximately 93% of the yearly salary. Contracts usually run 10 months, until June 30.“

However, Russian clubs were most generous:

“Amazing behavior from Russian clubs who mostly paid 100% of the contracts!“

In Italy, there are ongoing negotiations between clubs and players on this matter. At the moment, clubs propose a cut that players will most likely refuse, but Matijašević proposes a solution that might be acceptable for all sides:

“In these difficult times for all, there’s an interesting negotiation in Italy between clubs and players. Clubs are proposing a 30% cut (equivalent to the last 3 salaries), which is difficult to accept for the players. Question is, should all remaining salaries of players be suspended or should the clubs assume, let’s say, half of the remaining salaries? My opinion is that an agreement should be found somewhere in between taking into consideration clubs‘ damages but also the time players stayed available for clubs (till April) and ‘worked‘ for the clubs. A 15% – 20% cut seems fair.“
