Turkey will be definitely deprived of the help from an important player in the FIVB Women’s Volleyball International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (August 1-4).

Meliha İsmailoğlu (born as Meliha Smajlović in Bosnia and Herzegovina) will not play the International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to a paperwork mistake, Turkey head coach Giovanni Guidetti informed via Twitter.

The case of Turkey national team outside hitter became international after it turned out that documentation for her participation in the tournament, that will be held in the Chinese city of Ningbo (Pool B), is incomplete and, therefore, the player cannot take part in it. This was strange knowing that a 25-year-old player has been defending the colors of Turkey for 7 years after she changed her sports nationality from Bosnian to Turkish.

The deadline for registering players for the Qualifier expired at midnight and Turkey head coach Giovanni Guidetti revealed on Twitter that İsmailoğlu definitely will not play in Ningbo.

“Meli (İsmailoğlu) started to play for Turkey in 2014 (in 2013 if we include beach volleyball)! In the last 6 years, Meli played in the World Championship, Grand Prix, VNL, European Championship! Meli trained all summer for one dream: to go to the Olympics. But, Meli can’t play the Olympic qualification tournament because someone, somewhere, many years ago, made a paperwork mistake. It doesn’t matter who did it. What matters is that the dream of a player is ruined. I think this isn’t right! But, I’m sure we’ll put more concentration and more anger on the court for Meli and for our team Turkey,“ Guidetti posted.
