In the uncommon volleyball conditions, under the strong sunlight at the football stadium Mané Garrincha in Brasília, the 40-year-old Sérgio Dutra Santos ‘Serginho’ has played his last game in the yellow jersey of Brazil.
In front of about 40,000 spectators (capacity about 73,000), Brazil beat Portugal 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 15-8) in the second friendly match between these two teams. First was held yesterday. With a little help of the Portuguese players, Serginho scored an ace to finish a duel and also his national team career during which he became a two-time Olympic champion.
The teams made an agreement to shorten a fourth set due to strong heat and blazing sun (players were even forced to wear sunglasses while playing), so it was played up to 15 points. Every touch of the ball by Serginho was followed by loud cheering of the crowd who was occasionally invading the pitch.
