The hosts, Brazilian Men’s Volleyball National Team, successfully opened their Final Six campaign of the 2017 FIVB World League as they overpowered Canada 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19).

In winter conditions at the „Arena da Baixada“ in Curitiba (approximately 14 degrees at the venue, which is against the rules of the FIVB), Brazilian players gave their loud fans in half-empty stadium a reason to be happy due to the fact they beat North American side, but also gave their coach Renan Dal Zotto a reason to be worried before the continuation of the tournament where they aim for gold.

Canadians fought like hell, took one set, were competitive in all others with the exception of a fourth and missed the opportunity to shock the host team. They can mostly regret for dropping a three-point lead in the middle of the third set.

Wallace de Souza was unstoppable in Brazil, making 18 points, while Ricardo Lucarelli added 12. In Canada, Graham Vigrass noted 15 while John Gordon Perrin had 14.
